School dress code change proposed

Fans of camouflage clothing may soon be able to wear it to school again.
Hartselle School Board approved a first reading recommendation from Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed to lift two restrictions in the school system’s dress code for students.
School policy stipulates that the wearing of earrings is to be confined to the ear lobe only. The proposed revised policy would allow them to be worn on any part of the ear. In addition, a ban on the wearing of camouflage clothing items would be lifted.
Two others policies were recommended for revision and received first reading approval. Policy also sets June 1 as the last day prior to a new school year to accept applications for student transfers and/or withdrawals. The new date would be May 1.
Another policy change would remove the distinction between out-of-county and out-of-district students for tuition as applied to tuition for out-of-district students.
All of the policy revisions will be considered for adoption at the next school board meeting.
The board acted on other matters as follows:
Reed announced plans to form a committee to study the school’s systems student attendance policy and invited board members to volunteer to serve.
