Interest growing in home gardening
By By Clif Knight, Hartselle Enquirer
Tired of paying high prices for fresh vegetables at the supermarket? If so, you might want to try your hand at growing them in a backyard garden in 2008.
To help the inexperienced gardener get started, the Morgan County Extension System Office in Hartselle is offering four classes in March. They are free and open to the public.
The classes will begin on March 2 on the subject of “Beginning a Vegetable Garden.” Dan Porch, Blount County Extension coordinator, will give instructions on selecting a garden site, preparing the soil and choosing the proper seeds to plant.
On March 16, the subject will be “Utilizing the Harvest-Freezing, Drying and Canning”. Emily Campbell, Alabama Cooperative Regional Extension agent, will be the instructor.
All of the classes will be held at the Morgan County Agriculture Center, located at 3120- Hwy. 36W. They will begin at 6 p.m. and last for about two hours.
To register for one or more classes, call Morgan County Co Extension at 773-2549.
