Brewer's Coleman won't return this fall

FLORETTE - Billy Coleman has always wanted to do what’s best for the Brewer football program.
His goal was the same when he came to the program in 2004. And he leaves with the same desire - to make Brewer football a stronger program in the future.
Coleman met with Brewer players Wednesday to tell them he won’t be returning as the Patriots’ coach this fall.
Coleman has gone 11-39 at Brewer in five seasons after he initially came out of retirement to take over a program that had won just one game in the three previous seasons.
Now Coleman heads back into retirement comfortable in the fact that the Brewer program is as strong as it has been in years.
Coleman would like to see a new coach come in a take the program to the next level.
Brewer finished 2-8 last year, but had a strong run in the second half of the season that proved the current players are ready to compete this fall.
Coleman believes the level of experience returning this fall for the Patriots makes the job much more attractive than it was when he came to the school in 2004.
The next step in making Brewer more competive on the football field, Coleman says, would be to give supplements to the coaches at Brewer’s six feeder schools.
Those schools play at Brewer High School every Thursday night during the season.
Coleman, who plans to run for superintendent in 2010 in Cullman County where he still lives, hopes that the Morgan County School Board can use his supplement to split between the six junior high programs.
