Honors for local players
By By Todd Thompson, Hartselle Enquirer
When Brewer head girls basketball coach Ricky Allen needed someone to step up this season for the Lady Patriots, Morgan Crawley and Emily Dabbs always seemed ready to come up with their biggest performnances.
The Lady Patriots’ pair recently was named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s all-state basketball team after helping to lead Brewer to the Class 5A state championship game earlier this month.
Crawley, a 5-foot-9 guard, was named to the Class 5A all-state first team, while Dabbs, a 5-foot-8 junior picked up second team honors.
Crawley and Dabbs helped send Brewer to the Class 5A finals for the first time in school history. The Lady Patriots lost to LeFlore in the Class 5A state championship game.
Dabbs was a first-team selection last year for the Lady Patriots.
The two Brewer standouts weren’t the only area players honored by the ASWA, either.
Falkville senior Jake Randolph was an honorable mention selection for the Blue Devils in Class 2A.
In Class 3A, Danville sophomore Ashley Nance was also an honorable mention choice.
The ASWA’s boys’ Super Five was comprised by Parker’s Eric Bledsoe, Madison Academy’s Kerron Johnson, LeFlore’s Demarcus Cousins, Vestavia Hills’ Jordan Swing and David Murray of Leeds.
The girls’ Super Five was made up of Bob Jones’ Jala Harris, Talladega’s Jessica Merritt, Woodland’s Courtney Strain, Sparkman’s Adrienne Webb and Hazlewood’s Amber Jones.
Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball will be announced at the ASWA prep basketball Player of the Year banquet April 2 in Birmingham.
Blue Devil gets ace
Travis Blankenship, a member of the Falkville High School golf team, had a hole-in-one Sunday at Quail Creek Golf and Conference Center in Hartselle.
Blankenship used a 6-iron to score the ace on Quail Creek’s 165-yard seventh hole.
Witnesses to the hole-in-one were Shelley Blankenship and Melanie Blankenship.
