A familiar face is returning to Hartselle's School Board.
Hartselle's City Council unanimously appointed Dr. James Joy to the board Tuesday night. Joy, a dentist, replaced Dr. Andy Dukes, a family medical practiotioner. Dukes did not reapply for his seat.
The appointment went against the recommendation of Mayor Dwight Tankersley, who was out of town Tuesday night. Tankersley had endorsed Anita Buckley, his cousin, for the position, saying she was the most qualified. Buckley was a finalist for the position of Hartselle School Superintendent and a former director of curriculum for the State Board of Education. She has also served as a teacher and school administrator.
The motion to appoint Joy was made by Mark Mizell and seconded by Don Hall.
This will be Joy's second stint on the school board, having served from 2003-2005. He was replaced by Jeff Gray and has since reapplied twice. Joy will serve a five-year term.
