Danville steamrolls Eagles

VINEMONT - Playing on the road suits Danville just fine.
The third-ranked Hawks swept two games from Vinemont Friday in the opening round of the Class 3A state baseball playoffs, winning 13-3 and 13-2.
With the help of 11 walks in less than two innings, Danville knocked Vinemont’s Todd Schiehl out early in the second game on the way to getting the sweep of the series.
The Hawks, who improved to 24-9 overall with the sweep, scored 10 runs off Schiehl with just two hits.
Danville will face Hamilton in the second round on the road Friday. The Aggies beat Danville twice earlier this season to win the Class 3A, Area 11 championship.
Hamilton scored 14 runs in the two meetings, but 10 of the runs were unearned.
Vinemont finished the season with a 17-19 record.
Cole Veazey allowed just three hits to pick up the win for the Hawks. He finished with three strikeouts.
Danville loaded the bases with three walks in the first inning against Schiehl. A wild pitch and a base hit put the Hawks in front 3-2.
Danville added another run to close out the first inning on two more walks and a passed ball.
Zac Ward doubled twice to lead the Hawks, while Veazey added a double.
Danville also got singles from Parker Hogan, Matthew Vest, Schuyler Forman, Thomas Russell and Hunter Stover in the opening game.
Ward led the way with a pair of doubles. Veazey doubled and was also the winning pitcher. He struck out three and scattered three hits.
Schiehl’s control problems continued in the second inning with six more walks, including four with two outs.
Danville 13, Vinemont 2
Danville scored eight runs with six hits in the first game of the series with the Eagles and coasted to the win.
Vinemont led 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but the rest of the game belonged to the Danville hitters.
Randy Thomason had a home run and a single to lead the Hawks in the opening game.
Cole Veazey and Zac Ward had a single and a double each, while Jacob Fields and Parker Hogan both finished with two singles.
Also picking up hits for Danville in the opener was Schyler Forman, Thomas Russell and Matthew Vest.
Jacob Young picked up the win after scattering five hits. He finished with three strikeouts.
