Day of Caring

F.E. Burleson Elementary School students celebrated the end of testing last Friday by participating in a Day of Caring and giving something back to their community.
Caring stations were set up at various locations throughout the school and a rotating schedule was used to give every student from first though fifth grade the opportunity to do something to help someone else.
For example, students painted pillowcases for children in foster homes and patients at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. They also made note cards and bookmarks for Meals on Wheels recipients, Hospice patients and Sierra Springs residents, thank you notes for military personnel serving in Iraq, banners for Partners in Education and Mother’s Day cards for Volunteers of America participants.
Students also donated nonperishable canned food items and made quarter donations to Relay for Life, and participated in a Relay for Life walk during their recess periods.
Planning for the event began last December after students participated in a mini-caring day, according to project coordinator Debra Harvel.
