Sheriff’s office receives grant
By Staff
Gov. Bob Riley is providing a $25,000 grant to help the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office shed some light on its investigations. The grant will be used to purchase an inflatable light tower and other law enforcement equipment.
The light tower will provide instantaneous light over a large area making it useful for crime scenes, disaster areas, searches and special events.
A light tower is powered by a portable generator and can be set up in less than five minutes by one individual. Towers are typically about 15 feet tall when inflated but compact enough to be transported in the trunk of a vehicle. An area as large as two football fields can be illuminated by a single tower.
The sheriff’s office also will purchase surveillance equipment and identification vest covers used during raids and other law enforcement activities.
County officials say the equipment will be used primarily by the Morgan County Narcotics and Violent Crimes Task Force, but also will be available for use in other investigations.
