Neel Senior Center reapplies for grant

Neel Senior Center has renewed its efforts to seek federal funding for the construction of a new facility.
A pubic hearing was conducted at the senior center on May 1 as a required step in the process of reapplying for a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant. The amount includes a $25,000 cash contribution from the District 2 Road and Bridge Fund and in-kind assistance to remove the old senior center building on Danville Road.
The hearing was conducted by Morgan County Commission Chairman John Glasscock with the assistance of District 2 Commissioner Ken Livingston, Grant Consultant Charles Sherrod of Muscle Shoals and Joyce Compton, site manager. In addition, State Senator Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) and District 4 State Representative Mickey Hammon (R-Decatur) were present to lend their support. About 30 senior citizens who regularly attend meetings at the center were also present.
He pointed out that 2009 grants will be announced in August or September and, if approval is granted, the project could be under construction in 2010.”
Livingston added, “Hartselle had to apply for the grant three times before it was approved.”
Hammon pledged he would work hard with Orr to get the grant approved.
Compton said the senior site was moved to its present location (old Neel School lunchroom) about five years ago because the original site was in bad condition.
Sherrod said the proposed new building will consist of 2,400 sq. ft of floor space, be handicap accessible and serve as a storm shelter.
