Rebekah Maddox, a freshman at Priceville High School sent shock waves through Celebra-tion Area in Priceville on Saturday when she and her show horse “Peggy Sue” emerged as grand championship winner in the Juvenile Class (17 and younger) at the 38th Annual Spring Racking Horse Competition.
Earlier in the competition, they won the blue ribbon in a juvenile class for riders between the ages of 13 and 17.
This time a year ago, Rebekah had never had a riding lesson and had only been on the back of a saddle horse a few times. That changed about seven months ago when her family purchased Peggy Sue, an experience d racking mare, and turned her loose with trainer Jamie Lawrence of Vinemont. Rebekah’s riding skills developed quickly and she rode her horse to a blue ribbon performance in a local show last November.
The 15-year-old trains on her horse two or three times a week and is looking forward competing in world championship competition at Celebration Arena next fall. She also plays a flute in the senior high band at Priceville High School.
Rebecca is the daughter of Mike Maddox of Priceville and Sindy Maddox of Somerville. Mickey and Christine Maddox of Priceville are her grandparents.
