Hartselle wins state golf title

MONTGOMERY - Given the youth of Hartselle’s girls’ golf team, the rest of the state surely took notice when the Lady Tigers stormed to the Class 1A-5A state championship Tuesday at Robert Trent Jones’ Capitol Hill Senator Course.
Hartselle cut 20 strokes off its first-day team score and easily beat Scottsboro for the Class 1A-5A title, the first girls’ golf title in school history.
It was also the first state girls’ golf title for any Morgan County school.
Arin Eddy and Kaylon King finished fifth and sixth respectively after stellar rounds Tuesday.
Eddy shot a 77 with birdies on the fourth and fifth holes. She finished with eight pars in the final round - four on the front side and four on the back nine.
King had just one birdie in the final round - on No. 8 - but she had 10 pars to finished with an 86, four strokes better than her first day score.
Heather Nail shot a 90 and finished with a two-day score of 185, good for 13th place. Mary Roberts finished Tuesday’s round with a 101 and her total score of 199 earned her a tie for 21st place.
St. Paul’s finished third, with Piedmont, Alexandria and Brookwood filling out the top six team scores.
Hartselle shocked the Class 1A-5A state tournament Monday by taking the lead at the midway point of the tournament.
Hartselle began the second round with a five-shot lead over Piedmont. The Lady Bulldogs shot a first-day score of 274.
The Lady Tigers finished the first round with a team score of 269 after King and Eddy both finished in the top 10.
King was tied for sixth after the opening day of play after carding an 86. Eddy shot an 88, but only after a two-stroke penalty when one of her putts hit the flag before one of the other players could tend it.
King played the first round with seven pars. She had her lone birdie of the round on the 15th hole.
Eddy was tied for eighth after the first round after recording six pars and one birdie.
Nail and Roberts shot rounds of 95 and 98. Both finished the opening round in the top 20.
