Plans under way for HHS celebration

Hartselle Historical Society is leading an effort to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Hartselle High School and its predecessor, Morgan County High School.
A committee headed by Bettye English met last week at the Fine Arts Center to share ideas and information and begin the planning process. The school’s rich history will be the focus of a Depot Days Down Memory Lane program in September.
Each decade of the school’s history, from 1909 to 2009, will be represented by a display of historic memorabilia, including old class photos and others commonly found in school annuals, printed materials, classroom furnishings and equipment and period costumes.
While some such memorabilia has already been collected and is in the custody of the historical society, other items are needed. Anyone wishing to loan such items for copying and/or display is invited to contact Clif Knight at the Hartselle Enquirer at 773-6566 or Bettye English at 773-9390.
The decade displays as well as special displays depicting the school’s sports teams, band and chorus throughout the years will be set up in the classrooms of the art center and open for public viewing. A formal program will follow. It will consist of recognition for former and present principals and teachers, comments from school officials and a slide presentation on the school’s history by local historian David Burleson.
Working with English as HHS centennial committee members are: David Burleson, Anthony Patterson, Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed, HHS Principal Dr. Jeff Hyche, J.P. and Ruth Cain, Faye Walker, Pearl McCarley, Dianne Griffith,Clif Knight, Cherie King, Mitch Coon, Frank Parker, Franklin Penn, Jane Wilcoxson.
