Michael Dekich’s first year at Auburn has been a learning experience.
Now the former Falkville track standout will put those lessons to use this weekend in the Alabama Sports Festival State Games.
Dekich will compete in the javelin at Hoover High School Saturday, his third time to participate in the Alabama State Games, a multi-sport competition that is celebrating its 27th year.
The Alabama Sports Festiveal State Games will open Friday at verious venues around the Birmingham metro area.
Hundreds of athletes will participate in 22 events in the Olympic-style competition.
Dekich was the Class 2A state champion in the javelin in 2007 and 2008. He also finished seventh in the USATF Nationals.
Dekich walked on at Auburn following his graduation from Falkville in 2008.
For Dekich, that means a whole new level of competition. Many of the track athletes in the SEC are Olympic-caliber athletes.
Dekich had a scholarship at Wallace State Community College, but when the school decided to disband its track program he decided to walk on at Auburn.
That means hitting the road competing in some of the nation’s toughest track meets.
