Heavy damage caused by Monday night storm

HU line crews began responding to power outages as early as 8 p.m. Monday and were still on the job at midmorning Tuesday, locating and reattaching service lines and replacing downed poles.
Damage was caused by straight-line wind gusts that reached about 70 miles per hour, according to the U.S. Weather Service in Huntsville. The storm was also marked by rapid-fire lightning, hail and torrential rainfall. While reports of downed trees and property damage were widespread across the city, there were no reported injuries.
Area receiving very heavy damage included High Street, Sparkman Street, Bethel Road, Tanner Heights and Parker Road.
The Jeff Johnson family was shocked but escaped unhurt when a huge oak tree fell on their house at 1201 South Sparkman Street.
Franklin Turney reported he had two cars in his driveway damaged when a large pecan tree fell on top of them.
Gerald and Leslie Johnson were cleaning up the debris from three uprooted pecan trees in the front yards of two houses they own at 501 and 503 Bethel Road earl Tuesday.
Mayor Dwight Tankersley said his family’s home in Booth-Meadows Estates received minor damage from the storm.
