Vacuum sales land three behind bars

A trio of door-to-door vacuum cleaner salespeople landed in Hartselle City Jail last week, accused of violating the city’s solicitation ordinance.
The three were arrested after they came to city hall to inquire about a business license. City officials told them they could not purchase a business license for door-to-door sales, which are illegal in Hartselle. The trio allegedly admitted making door-to-door calls but could not produce an appointment book. Door-to-door sales with prearranged appointments are allowed under the city’s ordinance.
They later claimed they thought the Bethel Road area where they were working was in Falkville, not Hartselle. However, Falkville also has an anti door-to-door solicitation ordinance.
The three were arrested and charged with engaging in business without a license. Arrested were Racheal Maria Ellis, 24; Harold Lynn Horton, 26; and Kenneth John Baker, 30. They were later released on bond.
City officials said they have received complaints about similar door-to-door salespeople in the past.
Hartselle Police advise anyone who’s approached by door-to-door salespeople to be cautious and call them with any concerns.
