Sept. 3, 1959-A workshop for Morgan County teachers was held at MCHS today. Hartselle teachers serving as workshop leaders included Mrs. Faye Parker, Mrs. Beulah Petty, Mrs. Lucille Nicholson, Mrs. Opal Stewart, and Coach J. P. Cain.
Sept. 3, 1959—Martha Lynn Roberts is spending this week in Dothan and Panama City, Fla., the guest of the O. C. Brown family and Don Brown.
Sept. 3, 1959—Carolyn Teague left Hartselle Tuesday night for a far corner of the world where she spent many years of her life, Japan. She is returning to attend a centennial celebration of Protestant missions being founded, which will be held in Tokyo next month. She originally arrived in Japan in 1912. Through her endless efforts and strong Christian convictions she brought many Japanese into the Methodist faith, over the years. She was the first Christian missionary in the Kyushu Island area.
Sept. 4, 1959-The Morgan County Sportsmen’s and Conservation Association held its annual barbecue supper at Flint school tonight.
Sept. 4, 1959-Hartselle area music lovers who had become accustomed to enjoying performances of the Metropolitan Opera in Birmingham will be disappointed to learn that the company is dropping the city from its touring schedule. New Orleans will be the replacement.
Sept. 5, 1959-Coach Bear Bryant said that he spent the entire first week of fall training with his football players, either on the practice field or in their dorm. He said, “I just felt that if I were there I might be some help, that there might be some problems we could talk over.”
Sept. 6, 1959-The Luker family held a reunion at the Hartselle tabernacle campground today.
Sept. 6, 1959-The annual all-day singing was held at Mt. Nebo church today. Allen Humphries is chairman of the singing.
Sept. 6, 1959-The Hartselle Presbyterian Church held an open house marking finishing of the initial unit of the church building and dedicated a new sanctuary organ today. Rev. W. P. Maxwell is pastor of the church.
Sept. 6, 1959-Doctors confirmed today that a five-year-old Falkville 2 girl has polio. She had not received the Salk polio shot. The Morgan County health department’s supply of the vaccine was depleted several weeks ago. More is on the way.
Sept. 7, 1959—Seven-year-old Billy Murray, Hartselle 4, was struck by a car near here today and immediately taken to Block-Chandler Hospital where he is reported to be in “fair” condition. He was hurt when he darted across Highway 36 1.1 miles east of Hartselle and was hit by a station wagon.
Sept. 8, 1959-Morgan County schools began classes today. There will once again be no cotton-picking vacation in rural schools.
Sept. 8, 1959-Postmaster Hugh Penn has asked the city government to perform a job that his men do now-numbering houses. City officials seem unwilling at this point to take on this new responsibility.
Sept. 8, 1959-Enlargement and expansion of Hartselle’s existing water facilities is a major need. There are now more than 1,800 water consumers as compared to 1,714 nine months ago.
The city government is going to provide improved water service to homes near Salem church on Barkley Bridge Road.
Sept. 9, 1959—Jim Ledbetter, former MCHS basketball ace, looms tall in the Crimson Tide’s future hoop plans.
Coach Hayden Riley says he expects Ledbetter to play a big role in the 1959-60 season.
Sept. 9, 1959-Funeral services were held at Friendship church near Danville this afternoon for M. F. Collins, Hartselle 1, who died at Hartselle Hospital Monday afternoon. The Revs. Daryl Harris, Cline Shaneyfelt, and Isaac Eady officiated.
Sept. 9, 1959-It seems like the new local Crestline Elementary School has just started operating but, according to Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten, it is already bursting at the seams.
