MORRIS - Mortimer Jordan used a big third quarter to break a halftime tie on the way to a 24-14 victory over Brewer Friday night in the first regional game of the season for Brewer.
Brewer fell to 0-2 overall with the loss despite cutting their turnovers down from the Patriots’ opening game.
The game began in a most unusual way when the second play from scrimmage resulted in dead-ball, offsetting personal foul penalties between the Blue Devils fullback, Dontrell Purifoy, and Brewer middle linebacker, Matthew Crowe. The unusual part came when the head official brought both players out of their huddles and made them hug at the line of scrimmage before continuing play.
Crowe went on to lead the Patriots in tackles with 11.
Purifoy countered with two touchdowns and 130 yards rushing in the win.
Mortimer Jordan’s initial possession resulted in a touchdown, with the key play of the drive being a 35-yard run by Purifoy.
Marquis Dobbs ran it in from the 2-yard line for the touchdown.
The Patriots answered in the first quarter with a 70-yard drive ending on a 1-yard touchdown run by Tyler Parker.
The key play in the Patriots' drive was when Parker connected with Taylor Bowling on a 55-yard pass, ending at the 1-yard line.
After a scoreless second quarter, the third proved to be the difference in the game as the ball would never be put into play in Mortimer Jordan territory.
Field position allowed Mortimer Jordan to have two touchdown drives of 49 and 41 yards and a field goal on another drive that began at the Brewer 35.
The Blue Devil's kicker prevented any possibility of returns, kicking for touchbacks four times. An interception also kept the field turned for the Blue Devils in the third quarter.
Despite being down 24-7, the grit of the Patriots never failed as they rallied in the fourth quarter and moved down the field on an 80-yard touchdown drive. Parker scored again from the 1-yard line.
For the second week in a row, the Patriots produced more offense rushing and passing than their opponents.
Parker was 16-for-25 with 172 yards and an interception, while Phillip Newby had 101 yards rushing and 76 yards receiving.
Taylor Bowling caught two passes for 73 yards. Nathan Styles was second behind Crowe in tackles with 6 1/2.
Brewer opens the 2009 home season Friday when the Patriots host Hayden.
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. The broadcast of the game will be on www.wkul.com starting at 6:45 p.m.
