County Commission approves new board to operate Celebration Arena

Morgan County Commission authorized the establishment of a Pubic Park &Recreation Board to acquire, improve, maintain and operate the Southeastern Horse Center (Celebration Arena) in Priceville at a regular meeting on Sept. 22.
The board will consist of five members, one each recommended by the county commissioners and the fifth elected at large. In addition to having authority to manage the horse center, the board will be responsible for appointing an advisory board to assist it.
The board will be formed after the Product Marts Authority purchases the horse center, a 118-acre property located on Highway 67. At an earlier meeting, the authority indicated it was willing to invest in the property providing the commission would assume responsibility for maintaining it.
The commission’s action followed the receipt of a petition filed by Burl Slaten, Lonnie Williams and Johnny Maxwell.
In another matter the commission accepted low bids for road materials for the new fiscal year as follows: concrete pipe, Harvey Culvert Co.; hot bituminous plant mix, Wiregrass Construction Co.; bituminous surface treatments, Charles E. Watts Inc.; cold mix, Wiregrass Constuction Co.;and stone, Vulcan Construction Materials (Lacon and Trinity quarries). With no bids offered, County Engineer Greg Bodley was authorized to re-advertise for bids on liquid asphalt.
