FALKVILLE - Winston County’s Yellow Jackets showed why they’re undefeated and sitting atop the standings in Class 2A, Region 7 as they shut out Falkville’s Blue Devils 27-0 in a regional match up at Burl Vest Stadium Friday night.
By winning the visitors remained unbeaten after four games and moved to 3-0 in regional competition. The Blue Devils are 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the region.
The Yellow Jackets dominated on offense by running for 237 yards and passing for 129 yards. Their defense limited the Blue Devils to 67 yards passing and minus 32 yards rushing.
Falkville’s only scoring threat occurred in the fourth quarter after they recovered a fumble on Winston County’s 40-yard line. A personal foul penalty against the Yellow Jackets moved the ball inside the 20-yard line but three running plays gained only five yards and a fourth down pass fell incomplete.
The Yellow Jackets grabbed a 7-0 lead on their first possession by marching 56 yards on six plays. Josh Johnson capped the drive with a 2-yard run and Jordan Courington converted the extra point with 6:32 left in the first period.
They scored again with 22 seconds left in the first period on an 80-yard pass from Cole Hayes to Jaice Hampton. Courington kicked the PAT to make the score 14-0.
A 26-yard run by Hayes with three seconds left in the second quarter and a PAT by Courington gave the visitors a 21-0 halftime lead.
The Yellow Jackets capped their scoring on a 58-yard run by Hayes with 10:8 left in the third period. Courington’s kick for the extra point was no good.
The Blue Devils were forced to play three different quarterbacks in the game. Aaron Lee had difficulty passing the ball because of a shoulder injury he sustained in the previous game and was pulled midway in the second period. He was replaced by Tyler Anders who had to leave the game in the fourth period after he injured his left knee. Nate Austill took over for him and finished the game even though he was struggling with a leg injury.
