Danville sets record in win over Priceville

PRICEVILLE - Danville was practically unstoppable in its 73-6 win over Priceville Friday night.
The Hawks scored on their first nine possessions of the game and 11 of 12 overall as they moved to 5-0 on the season.
Priceville dropped to 1-4 overall with the loss.
Levi George (15 carries, 107 yards and three touchdowns) got the scoring started for Danville on a 6-yard run.
Mario Cortez kicked the first of 10 extra points to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead with 10:23 left in the opening quarter.
George added another touchdown on a 1-yard run with 12 seconds left in the quarter and after Cortez’s kick, the Hawks led 17-0.
In between George’s touchdown runs, Cortez kicked a 27-yard field goal.
Danville had the ball for just nine plays in the second quarter, but the Hawks scored on five of those plays to take a 52-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
Like George in the first quarter, senior wide receiver Tyler Beck started and ended Danville’s scoring in the second period. Beck scored on an 81-yard run to give the Hawks a 24-0 lead and his 44-yard reception from Caleb Hill as time expired in the quarter gave the Hawks their final points of the first half.
In between, Danville got touchdowns from Clint McAbee, Evan Cleghorn and David Cortez.
McAbee and Cleghorn caught touchdown passes of 25 and 23 yards from Hill, while Cortez ran 64 yards for the score on his only carry of the evening.
After just two quarters of play, the Hawks had 453 yards of total offense (254 rushing and 199 passing).
Danville scored just once in the third quarter, with George getting his final touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run midway through the quarter. Cortez added the extra point to give the Hawks a 59-0 lead.
Priceville got their only score of the night on the ensuing possession with Chance Ellsworth and Tanner Schell connecting for a 66-yard touchdown pass.
The two-point try failed and Danville led 59-6 with 5:22 remaining in the third period.
The fourth quarter saw Danville score twice more with Cody Hudgins getting into the end zone on a 38-yard run and Thomas Russell ended the scoring on an 11-yard pass from Trey Jones.
Cortez hit his 10th extra point to close out the 73-6 win.
The 73 points scored is the most ever by a Danville football team.
The Hawks finished the night with 645 yards of offense, 368 rushing and 277 passing.
Danville’s defense allowed Priceville just 14 yards rushing and 130 total. Individually for the Hawks, George led all rushers with 107 yards while Beck had 91 yards receiving on four catches and 81 yards rushing on just one attempt. Cleghorn also caught four passes for 80 yards.
Danville will begin a very important two-game stretch tomorrow night (Friday) against the Winfield Pirates in the Hawks’ homecoming game.
Priceville travels to Grant to face DAR.
