Devils falter in loss

FALKVILLE - Vinemont’s Eagles took advantage of Falkville errors and poor field position by scoring four touchdowns in the first half and going on to defeat the Blue Devils 35-6 at Burl Vest Stadium Friday night.
The loss left the Blue Devils with a 1-4 record overall and 1-2 in 2A Region 7. By winning the Eagles improved their season record to 3-2 and remained at 1-2 in 3A Region 7.
The Blue Devils dug themselves a hole they couldn’t escape in the first half. On their first possession they were forced to punt from their own four-yard line after a snap from center sailed over the head of the quarterback, resulting in a 22-yard loss.
On their next possession they had to punt from their own 18-yard line following a six-yard loss and a delay of game penalty.
The third time they had the ball they fumbled on their 15-yard line and Vinemont ran it in for a score.
On their fourth possession, they had to kick from their own 20-yard line and Vinemont got the ball on the 8-yard line after the kick was blocked.
While the Blue Devils fared better in the second half, allowing just one score, they didn’t get their offense untracked until late in the fourth quarter. After recovering a Vinemont fumble at their own one-yard line, they marched 99 yards on 12 plays and scored on an eight-yard pass from Tyler Anders to Austin Zimmerman on the last play of the game.
The Eagles scored their first touchdown on a 27-yard pass from Reno Jones to Tyler Jackson with 9:01 left in the first quarter. Colton Brown booted the extra point to make the score 7-0
The same two players connected on a 20-yard pass to account for Vinemont’s second touchdown with 4:08 left in the first period. Brown’s PAT made the score 14-0.
Jordan Marchman scooped up a Falkville fumble and ran it in from 15 yards out with 2:52 left in the second period. Brown booted the extra point to make the score 21-0.
Caleb Culp scored Vinemont’s fourth touchdown on a one-yard plunge with 11:53 left in the first half. Brown added the PAT to make the score 28-0.
Falkville managed to pick up only one first down in the first half. It came on a 17-yard pass from Nate Austill to Tyler Anders.
Vinemont scored its final touchdown on a 10-yard pass with 8:22 left in the third period. Brown added the extra point to make the score 35-0.
Falkville had 67 yards passing and minus 17 yards rushing. Vinemont gained 126 yards on the ground and 56 yards through the air.
Both teams lost two fumbles.
