Hartselle beats Danville for county title

DECATUR - Hartselle gained a measure of revenge from Danville in the finals of the Morgan County Volleyball Tournament Thursday at Decatur High School.
The Lady Tigers, ranked second in the Class 5A volleyball poll, beat Danville 25-14, 25-20 in the tournament championship.
It was Hartselle’s first county championship since 2007.
Alex Holmes, Cory Livingston and Callie Miller were named to the all-tournament team after the Lady Tigers went through the tournament undefeated.
Holmes had 16 kills, 52 assists and 11 aces in the tournament, while Olivia Golden finished with 26 kills, 22 assists, 17 digs and four aces.
Livingston had a team-high 42 digs and chipped in 22 kills for the Lady Tigers.
Callie Miller had 35 digs and three aces.
Hartselle beat Falkville and Priceville to win its pool and beat Brewer 25-19, 25-11 to reach the championship match.
Hartselle was scheduled to host the Class 5A, Area 15 tournament Thursday.
Danville needed three games to beat Austin in its semifinal matchup, finally besting the Lady Black Bears 22-25, 25-22, 15-8.
Lindsay Simmons led Danville with 46 kills and seven aces in the tournament.
Ashley Nance added 31 kills, eight blocks for the Lady Hawks, while Tara Wimberley had 17 kills, five aces and 48 digs.
Kaitlin Wallace had a team-high 74 assists, while Lacey Evans added 40 digs. Morgan Doherty had six aces.
Simmons and Wimberley were named to the all-tournament team, along with Brewer’s Chelsey Smith and Elizabeth Bromirski; Falkville’s Myka McCarley; and Priceville’s Kara Haynes and Darian Tucker.
Brewer finished second in its pool to advance to the semifinals before falling to rival Hartselle in two games.
Priceville reached the semifinals after splitting matches in pool play, while Falkville failed to advance from its pool.
Priceville opened pool play with a win over Falkville before falling to Hartselle in Pool A.
Danville dominates area
Danville swept the Class 3A, Area 11 tournament with wins over Hamilton and Winfield Monday afternoon.
The Lady Hawks didn’t lose a game in the two matches, beating Hamilton 25-7, 25-13, 25-18 and Winfield 25-10, 25-19, 25-15.
Lindsay Simmons and Ashley Nance finished with 25 and 22 kills respectively in the wins. Tara Wimberley added 17 aces, four blocks and 19 digs for Danville.
Nance, Lacey Evans, Morgan Doherty, Kaitlin Wallace, Wimberley and Simmons were all named to the all-tournament team. Simmons was the tournament’s most valuable player.
Danville will face Vinemont in the first round of the regionals Saturday.
