FALKVILLE - A 72-hour delay and a powerful Sulligent offense put a damper on homecoming festivities at Falkville Monday.
Sulligent scored 33 points in the first half and coasted to a 45-8 victory over the Blue Devils in a Class 2A, Region 7 game.
The loss was the fourth-straight for Falkville - all coming at the hands of teams that are in line to reach the playoffs this season. The Blue Devils are 1-6 overall and 1-4 in region play.
Falkvile has struggled offensively, scoring just 14 points in its last 16 quarters of play.
Sulligent, now 4-3 overall and 3-2 in Region 7, is tied with Addison for the third playoff spot from the region.
Sulligent’s special teams scored twice in the win - on a 55-yard interception return by Ahmad Walker and an 84-yard kickoff return by Steven Stewart.
Stewart, a junior, finished the night with a pair of touchdowns for Sulligent. He also scored on a 6-yard run in the opening quarter as Sulligent overcame muddy field conditions to take a 19-0 lead early.
Falkville’s only points came in the fourth quarter when Tyler Anders pulled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Lee.
The two teamed up on the two-point conversion pass to cut the final margin to 45-8.
Sulligent came into the game needing a win to keep in the hunt for a playoff spot in the competitive Region 7. Sulligent had lost two of its last three games before coming away with a win over Falkville.
Sulligent’s Peter Swarnigan had a 54-yard touchdown run and Logan Helms caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Parker Northington to cap Sulligent’s scoring.
Falkville will play at Cleveland next week in the final region game of the season.
