Baseball parents thank supporters
Editor:
The rings are here! On Sept. 30, the text messages flew. Boys from Florida, Arkansas, Mississippi, Birmingham, Decatur and Hartselle were so excited. The long-awaited state baseball championship rings were here. Rumors had floated for weeks they were coming. Now they were here.
But because everyone could not be at home and there was no good time to get everyone together for several weeks, the coaches decided to go ahead and give them out. So rings were picked up by boys and the parents of boys who could not get home to pick up their rings and delivered to them.
We, as the parents of these boys, would like to thank the contributors who paid for these rings. They are awesome and a keepsake to be cherished and flaunted. Some of these boys never bought a class ring. They were anticipating this championship ring.
So thank you very much for your support of these boys.
Also, a big thank you to Coach Booth, Coach Heaps, Coach Childers, Coach Wimberly, Coach Hall and Coach Hughes for your time that you invested in these boys. Thanks to the wives and the children who gave up their time with their husbands and fathers because of baseball.
Thank you Hartselle Enquirer and Todd Thompson for the book, “Tiger Roar Restored.” It was a wonderful way to remember the road to the championship.
Thanks to everyone who supported our State 5A baseball champions of 2009.

Somerville Civitans raise funds
Editor:
In a world so often filled with bad news, we would like to present some good news about our community. Scripture teaches us that we are to treat others as we would like them to treat us. This is part of “who we are” as Somerville Civitans. We seek to help as many people in our community as we possibly can. We also want to do all we can to help our town continue to prosper. In order to meet our goals, we have to depend on fundraisers. Recently, on Saturday, Sept. 26, the Somerville Civitan Club had our first annual pancake breakfast. We wish to thank everyone who supported this fund- raiser and helped us earn over $1100. We would also like to thank the following businesses which made donations for the breakfast: Foodland – Priceville; Gourmet To Go – Somerville; Jack’s – Somerville; Jailhouse Bar-B-Q – Somerville; Lowe’s – Hartselle; Pepsi; Piggly Wiggly – Somerville; Somerville Feed &Seed; and, Walmart – Decatur. Somerville Civitans believe that anyone who cares about people and his/her community, will conclude that this is the service organization for him/her. We welcome anyone to visit us any second or fourth Thursday, at 6:30, at the Hillard Long Community Center (located in Courthouse Square.)

Post office needs automated doors
Editor:
I recently witnessed a physically handicapped person struggle with the doors at the post office. I was prompted to contact the post master to inquire about what happened to the automated door system.
I was surprised to learn the budget does not include maintenance to correct this action and the problem would likely not be corrected. It has been four to five years since the doors worked automatically. Surely, it will not take four to five years to correct a problem that helps the handicapped.
It is apparent no corrective action is planned since the October budget is out. The postmaster mentioned the doors were disconnected due to problems with children playing with them. Further burden for the handicapped was given no consideration.
I am attempting to contact the postmaster general with my concern. Activation of at least one door to function automatically could improve a potentially unsafe situation.
Thank you for helping with this problem. This local condition should be resolved at the lowest level – such action would reflect responsibility. Do what is right!
