Danville third in Class 3A regional

ANNISTON - Danville wrapped up a spot in sub-state play Saturday with a third place finish in the Class 3A, Region C tournament at Walter Wellborn High School.
The Lady Hawks, seeking their fifth-straight trip to the Elite Eight in Pelham, blasted Piedmont 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 in the consolation match.
Danville will play at Madison Academy Thursday afternoon with a berth in the state tournament at stake.
Lindsay Simmons, Ashley Nance and Lacey Evans earned all-region honors.
Simmons finished the tournament with 60 kills. Nance had 40 kills, while Evans had 36 digs.
Danville opened the tournament with a 25-13, 25-18, 25-10 victory over Vinemont with the help of Simmons’ 19 kills and 12 from Nance.
Kaitlin Wallace led the Lady Hawks with 31 assists, while Tara Wimberley and Morgan Doherty had seven and five aces respectively.
Evans had a team-high eight digs and Simmons added seven digs.
In the semifinals, Pleasant Valley beat Danville 25-23, 14-25, 25-13, 20-25, 15-12.
Simmons had 21 kills and Nance added 18. Wallace chipped in with 34 assists, while Tara Wimberley had team-highs in aces with four and digs with 20.
Jada Callahan and Morgan Doherty added three aces each, while Simmons and Nance had four and two blocks respectively.
The Lady Hawks also got 16 digs from Lacey Evans, while Doherty added 11 digs.
In the consolation match, Danville needed just three games to beat Piedmont.
Simmons and Nance had 20 and 10 kills respectively, while Wallace had a team-high 32 assists.
Wimberley finished with 15 digs and three aces, while Simmons added three blocks. Evans had 12 digs in the win.
