Funeral for Dr. John T. Weiss, 82, of Alexandria, La. was Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Alexandria with Dr. Lee Weems officiating.
A graveside service will be held at the City Cemetery in Lincoln on Friday, October 23.
Dr. Weiss died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009. He was born March 16, 1927, in Lincoln to Mary and David Weiss. He had one sister, Helen Marie. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1949. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University and interned at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. After completing Tulane family practice residency at Lallie Kemp Charity Hospital in Independence, La., he practiced family medicine in Hobart, Ind. for 11 years. He returned to Tulane for a four-year residency in Orthopedics, three years at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La. and one year as Tulane Chief Resident for both Huey P. Long Charity Hospital and Veterans Hospital, both in Pineville, La. In 1969, he joined the Alexandria Orthopedic Clinic where he remained in practice specializing in total joint replacement and spine surgery until his retirement in 1997.
Dr. Weiss earned many honors, Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society at the University of Alabama; membership to the prestigious Tulane-Caldwell Society; member of the American Medical Assoc-iation, Louisianna State Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, Louisiana Orthopedic Ass-ociation, Southern Ortho-pedic Association and Tulane Medical Alumni Association; Fellow at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery; Clinical Assoc-iate Professor at Tulane University; and a pioneer in research on bone growth stimulators for the lumbar spine and an innovator in utilizing new techniques in total joint replacement and lumbar surgeries.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sara Thompson Weiss; two children, Susan and David; a daughter-in-law, Kathy York Weiss; three grandchildren, Lauren, John and William Weiss; and a future son-in-law, Matthew Anderson.
Pallbearers were John Weiss, William Weiss, Matthew Anderson, Fred Tarver, Clifford DePriest, Dr. Van Davidson, Dr. Cedric Lowrey, Dr. Hal Bailey, Col. R. Y. McBurney and Dr. Selcuk Sozen.
