Brewer routs Curry

FLORETTE - Brewer’s Patriots gave their fans plenty to shout about at homecoming by scoring the first two times they had the ball and going on to defeat Curry’s Yellow Jackets 40-29 at James R. Tucker Stadium Friday night.
Excitement over the prospect of ending a winless season began to swell early in the game as the Patriots’ defense forced Curry into a three-and-out possession and the offense cashed in by reeling off a 38-yard, four-play touchdown drive. Running back Philip Newby scored the go-ahead touchdown on a two-yard run with 9:29 left in the first period, after setting up the TD on runs of five and 16 yards.
The momentum they generated with that score never faltered even though they lost possession twice on pass interceptions.
Gullion said the win was special to him because it was his first as a head coach and it came on homecoming.
By winning the Patriots improved to 1-8 and 1-7 on the season. The visitors dropped to 2-7 and 1-7.
The Patriots marched 71 yards on five plays the second time they had the ball and extended their lead to 12-0 on a 32-yard pass from Tyler Parker to Taylor Bowling with 6:33 left in the first period, A two-point conversion attempt was no good.
Brewer had its hopes for a third possession touchdown dashed when a Parker pass was intercepted by Curry’s Chris Ellis in the end zone and returned 100 yards for a score. A two-point conversion attempt failed and Brewer ‘s lead was cut to 12-6 with 2:58 left in the first quarter.
The Patriots responded by scoring their third touchdown on a one-yard run by Kyle Downs with 40 second left in the first period. Parker added a two-point conversion on a running play to give his team a 20-6 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets cut Brewer’s lead to 20-9 on a 20-yard field goal by Jordan Grace with 8:26 left in the first half.
The Patriots set up their fourth touchdown by recovering a fumbled punt and marching 43 yards on six plays. Newby capped the drive by scoring from three yards out with 4:56 left in the first half. A running play for a two-point conversion was no good and the score remained at 26-9.
Curry cut Brewer’s lead to 26-15 with 10:15 left in the game on a one-yard touchdown run by Chay Pruitt and a two-point conversion pass from Dakota Woodard to Pruitt.
The Patriots responded with a 7-yard touchdown run by Newby with 10:02 left in the game. It came after T.G. Graham returned a kickoff 80 yards. A two-point conversion attempt failed.
Curry scored another touchdown on a 23-yard pass from Woodard to Jacob Freeman with 8:27 left in the final quarter. A two-point conversion made the score 32-23.
The Patriots added their final touchdown on a 10-yard run by Graham with 5:34 left in the game. He also ran the ball in for a two-point conversion to make the score 40-29.
Curry’s final score came on a 20-yard pass play with 2:38 remaining.
Brewer compiled 286 yards rushing and 40 yard passing as compared to 36 yards rushing and 158 yards passing by Curry.
Newby led the Patriots on offense with 158 yards rushing on 22 carries.
The Patriots host Priceville in the final game for both teams Friday.
