Brewer sweeps county championships

OAKVILLE - Brewer ran away with two county championships Thursday at the Northwest Alabama Cross County Championships at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park.
Emily Trotter and Clay Oden added to the Brewer sweep by winning individual county championships in the meet that determines titles in Lawrence and Morgan counties.
Brewer’s boys repeated as county champions with the four top runners from Morgan County.
Oden, just a sophomore, won the individual title with a time of 17:53.61.
Sam Martin (18:25.44), Fernando Arellanes (18:47.09) and Phillip Garrison (19:03.96) gave the Patriots a strong advantage over Decatur and Decatur Heritage, who tied for second in the county standings.
Brewer’s Jordan Caudle (10th, 19:52.83) and Jose Rodriguez (11th, 19:57.07) rounded out the Patriots’ scoring, while Cameron Cunningham (13th) and Clint Murphree (22nd) also had top 25 finishes.
Falkville’s Heath Blanchard was 23rd overall with a time of 22:47.98, while Michael Hopper and Alex Tuttle finished 24th and 25th respectively.
Brewer’s girls won the county title by seven points after having four of the top five finishers in the county standings.
Trotter led the Lady Patriots with a time of 20:06.30 - the best finish among Morgan County runners.
Her time was just 14 seconds off her best time of the season and came a year after she had struggled in the county championships.
Bree Watkins, Katie Brakke and Angel Childers finished third, fourth and fifth respectively to help send the Lady Patriots to the championship.
Watkins finished at 21:48.71 to lead the trio to the finish line. Brakke had a time of 23:07.82 and Childers came in at 23:21.24.
All three beat a group of four Decatur runners to the finish line to seal the win.
Brewer’s Felicia Prince finished 20th overall with a time of 28:45.80, while the Lady Patriots’ Kaitlin Kurtz was 27th overall at 31:55.04.
Falkville’s Sarah Ayre was 17th overall with a time of 27:42.04. Also earning top 20 finishes in the county race were Katrina Koerber (18th, 27:44.60) and Natalee Estes (19th, 28:27.68).
