Funeral for Donnie Lamar Brown, 58, of Hartselle will be Thursday (today), November 19, at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Wright officiating.
Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Brown died Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at his residence after a long illness. He was born August 13, 1951, in Decatur to William Russell Brown and Hazel Louise Self. He graduated from Danville High School and Northwest Alabama State Junior College. He retired from Decatur Parks and Recreation Department in 2005 after 29 years of service. After retirement he spent many hours at T.C. Almon playing ping pong with his friends. He was a long standing member of the Huntsville Track Club and competed in many long distance races across the Southeast. He ran his first marathon in 1994 at age 43. He was interested in his southern, Irish and Scottish heritage. He was a past Commander of the Sons of Liberty Camp 580 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and belonged to Clan MacDonald and Clan McGregor. He was taking bagpipe lessons unti his illness prevented him from continuing. He was a faithful member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He was a fan of Elvis and enjoyed Alabama football with his friend, Horace Sheats. He also loved to travel. In recent years he made a trip to Alaska with members of his church family and a trip to Ireland with his friend, Dr. Fontes. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell Brown.
He is survived by his mother, Hazel Brown of Hartselle; two brothers, Larry Brown and Harold Brown, both of Hartselle; and many other family members. He leaves behind many friends.
Pallbearers will be members of the Sons of Liberty Camp 580.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of the Valley.
