Flash flood causes heavy damage here

An intense thunderstorm dumped more than six inches of water on Hartselle and Morgan County Tuesday night causing widespread flash flooding and property damage in low-lying area.
Several stores in the central business district were inundated with up to two feet of water and mud, according to Mayor Dwight Tankersley. They included Cahoots Caf/, 36 and Main and Schofield’s Antiques and Collectibles. Heavy damage was reported. Flooding also occurred on Highway 31 just north of the Highway 31 and 36 intersection, and had to be closed to traffic for a short period of time.
Several streets were flooded and had to be closed, including Celia Drive and Rice Road where washouts occurred.
Tankersley said Public Works Superintendent Byron Turney saw trouble coming while attending a 7 p.m. council meeting and assembled a work crew shortly afterward.
The mayor said a report coming from Hartselle Airport indicated the city received about six and a half inches of rain on Tuesday.
Morgan County Emergency Management Agency indicated a number of roads were closed throughout the county because of flooding. Residents of Timber Gap Road had to be evacuated because of rising water. The southeastern part of the county seemed to the hardest hit.
