Funeral for Hugh Dwayne Smith, 73, of Falkville was Friday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m. at Gandy’s Cove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ira Laney and Jeri Hunt officiating.
Burial was in Hartselle City Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born April 12, 1936, in Morgan County to Arthur J. Smith Sr. and Jamie Peck Smith. He was a member of Gandy’s Cove United Methodist Church where he served on various committees as well as in other areas of church service until his declining health. He was involved in volunteer fire department development in his local department, Ebenezer VFD, and in county and state associations. He was retired from Monsanto as an instrument repair technician after 38 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Smith Carroll; and a brother, Hal Peck Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirley Smith of Falkville; two sons, Kenneth Smith and wife Vickie of Somerville and Mike Smith of Fairbanks, Alaska; a daughter, Donna Smith of Hartselle; two brothers, Arthur “Buddy” Smith and wife Jean and Charles Smith and wife Marynell, all of Hartselle; seven grandchildren, Jessica Miller of Decatur, Kira Smith of Colorado Springs, Co., Jeff Smith, Ethan Howell and Drew Smith and wife Natalie, all of Hartselle, Jason Smith of Madison and Jared Smith of Searcy, Ark.; and four great-grandchildren, Neelie and Olivia Miller and Savannah and Lydia Smith.
Pallbearers were Tim Womack, Gerry Holmes, Don Turney, Tim Dunlap, Keith Harper and Chris Bryant.
