Lang and talented leader
By By Todd Thompson, Hartselle Enquirer
Will Lang came into the 2009 football season as an unproven commodity for the Hartselle Tigers.
The junior, the Hartselle Enquirer’s 2009 Offensive Player of the Year, is blessed with a strong arm and a poise that projects well on the football field.
Lang threw 17 touchdown passes in his first season as the Tigers’ starting quarterback. He threw for more than 2,600 yards and helped lead Hartselle to a school-record 420 points in 13 games.
And his 70 percent completion made him one of the most dangerous passers in the state.
But now the son of a former football coach, Lang is looking toward the next season.
Lang’s season wasn’t without some difficulties. He finished with 10 interceptions - not a horrible number - but still disappointing considering many came with the Tigers in the red zone.
Region 8 gets respect:
While Hartselle had six players earn Honorable Mentions in the Alabama Sports Writers’ all-state team, several other players from Class 5A, Region 8 were first-team picks, including Russellville linebacker Brent Calloway, offensive lineman Justin Esquivel and defensive lineman Aaron Hollingsworth.
Former Brewer standout Spencer Region, now at Cullman, earned all-state honors on the offensive line.
Region, 6-foot-6, 354 pounds, is considered a SEC-caliber recruit.
