Jan. 7, 1960-Mr. and Mrs. Jack William Hoffhaus announce the engagement of their daughter, Anne Katherine, to Gene Carlton Crane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Crane of Decatur. Anne is a junior at Auburn and is treasurer of her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. Gene is a senior at Auburn and a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. Anne and Gene will be married at Hartselle’s First Methodist.
Jan. 7, 1960-Rep. Albert Brewer was the featured speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Flint Junior High PTA. His subject was how bills are passed into law in the Alabama Legislature.
Jan. 8, 1960- Claud Lavender, a former local boy, has been selected as external vice president of the Decatur High J-Club at a meeting tonight.
Jan. 9, 1960—A new product is on the market, guaranteed to stop oil burning. Motor Medic sells for $1.95 per can.
Jan. 10, 1960-The Morgan County Singing Convention met today at Friendship Baptist Church. Among the singers present was Tennis Sparkman who has attended every session of the convention since it was organized at Austinville Baptist Church in 1911. It has met every three months since then. Mr. Sparkman has occupied all convention offices, including the presidency seven times. Bud Reid is the current president. While interest in the singing convention is still high, it is not as high as it used to be when attendees numbered in the thousands.
Jan. 11, 1960—Morgan County Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten spoke to Falkville Lions tonight about the new 51/2-mill school property tax, which will be voted on in the near future. Wooten declared it essential that the tax be approved if our children are to get a decent education.
Jan. 11, 1960-Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Nicholson are the proud parents of a new baby daughter, Sheila Lynette, born at Baugh-Wiley-Smith Hospital in Decatur.
Jan. 12, 1960-Decatur beat MCHS in basketball there tonight by a score of 51-43. Rayford Luter was the Tigers’ leading scorer with 20 points.
Jan. 12, 1960-Hartselle’s new chapter of the Jaycees held its charter night program tonight. Howell Hogan is president of the new group. Special guests included Mayor John Burleson and two members of the city council. Others officers of the Jaycees besides Hogan include Robert Clemons, Sam Houston, Peck Smith, Leon Simmons, Arthur Smith Jr., Billy Charles Tanner, and Norman Puckett.
Jan. 12, 1960-Mrs. J. H. Stephenson, 69, passed away at her home this morning. Besides her husband, Mr. Stephenson, a daughter, Mrs. Hilda Thornhill, former Hartselle city clerk, and a brother, S. E. Gibson, former mayor, survive Mrs. Stevenson.
Jan. 13, 1960-The Citizens Bank of Hartselle opened its brand new building on Sparkman Street for business for the first time today. This is also the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the bank. A. D. Sample is president of the bank and Marvin H. Broom is vice-president. The bank has two drive-through windows. There are six inside teller windows. Other bank officers are Horace W. Broom, cashier, and J. L. Roberts, F. A. Bennett, W. T. Stewart, James E. Peck, Norman Harris, A. D. Sample, M. H. Broom, and Horace W. Broom, directors.
Jan. 13, 1960-The Morgan County library bookmobile visited the Morgan County Training School this afternoon.
