Hartselle takes pair from rivals

Hartselle’s last meeting with rival Brewer ended with a loss on a last-second shot.
The Lady Tigers made sure that Saturday’s matchup with the No. 2 ranked Lady Patriots didn’t come down to the closing seconds.
Hartselle opened up a 22-9 advantage over its rivals on the way to a 58-46 victory over Brewer in a game that was moved back a day because school was postponed Friday because of icy weather.
The Lady Tigers were nothing short of torrid against Brewer by making 12 of 22 shots from the field in the first half on the way to the 12-point victory.
Katie Young led Hartselle with 19 points, while Taylor White and Alex Holmes added 12 and 11 points respectively.
Elizabeth Bromirski scored 13 points to lead Brewer, while Chelsey Smith added 12 points.
The Lady Patriots had just five players score in the game and had just seven points off the bench - all from Hannah Crawford.
Brewer dropped to 16-2 overall with the loss - the team’s first since a November loss to Decatur.
Hartselle 50, Brewer 48
Hartselle’s boys earned their second win over Brewer this season with a 50-48 victory in overtime Saturday night.
Sam Fleischman scored six points - on three baskets - in overtime to lead the Tigers to the win. Chance Partlow had four free throws in the extra period as Hartselle held off its rivals.
Hartselle improved to 9-10 overall with the win. Brewer dropped to 7-11 with its second loss to the Patriots this season.
Partlow led Hartselle with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Sam Fleischman added 12 points. Terry Wiggins finished with nine points for the Tigers.
Brewer got a 29-point effort from guard Brandon Murray, who made nine of 20 shots from the field.
Jordan Bowling, who has been leading the Patriots’ offense recently, was limited to seven points.
The Patriots were hampered by 21 turnovers.
Hartselle made nine of its 18 shots from the field in the first half and held a 21-17 advantage heading into the third quarter.
But Brewer used a 12-9 run in the third quarter to pull to within a point at 30-29.
Hartselle had a chance to win the game at the end of the fourth quarter, but the missed Tigers a free throw in the closing seconds.
The teams traded baskets in the first four minutes of overtime with Hartselle taking a two-point advantage on several occasions.
Brewer grabbed a 48-47 lead with 46 seconds remaining in overtime when Bowling completed a three-point play after being fouled.
But Hartselle answered with 12 seconds left with a bucket from Fleischman and a free throw by Partlow to cap the win.
Brewer had a late chance to tie or win the game but the Patriots didn’t get a foul call on its final possession.
