Jan. 21, 1960-The following Hartselle area students are currently studying for the ministry at Athens College: Robert Heaps, Tolan Whitten, Vandon Windsor, Franklin Turney, and Leldon Hardin Jr.
Jan. 21, 1960-Dr. Jim Moody and Dr. Troy Kilpatrick will move their medical practices to Doctors Clinic and Hartselle Hospital later this year. Dr. Moody is a surgeon while Dr. Kilpatrick is a general practitioner.
Jan. 21, 1960-Dorothy Overbey, a specialist in consumer education, conducted a leadership school for home demonstration club members, at the Hartselle municipal auditorium today.
Jan. 22, 1960-Elga Smith of Hartselle suffered numerous cuts and bruises in an auto accident halfway between here and Decatur tonight. Two other occupants of the two vehicles involved were also hurt but none of the injuries are life-threatening.
Jan. 22, 1960—Dr. N. H. Vinson of Falkville died tonight at Decatur General. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. L. M. Speake and Mrs. W. P. Newman, both of Hartselle.
Jan. 23, 1960-Cotaco beat MCHS in basketball here tonight by the lopsided score of 67-51. Luter set the pace for the Tigers with 15 points. The Indians’ Lemmond was hot with 27 points.
Jan. 24, 1960-Dennis Homer Sherrill, who resides on Hammett Street, has been admitted as a patient at Decatur General.
Jan. 24, 1960-The AP has named its college football “team of the decade.” Auburn’s Jimmy Phillips and Zeke Smith were named to the first team. Bobby Marlow of Bama was named to the second team as were Jackie Burkett and Joe Childress of Auburn.
Jan. 24, 1960-The monthly singing was held tonight at Salem Methodist Church.
Guest singers were the McCoy Family of Addison with Sidney Hicks at the piano. Jesse Bodley is chairman of the singing.
Jan. 25, 1960-Several from Hartselle have tickets to see the hit stage musical, “My Fair Lady,” which began eight performances in Birmingham tonight at the municipal auditorium. In place of Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews who starred on Broadway are Michael Evans and Lola Fisher in the principal roles.
Jan. 25, 1960-Dr. Robert D. Sittason has relocated his dental offices to the building next door to Bean-Smith Drugs on Sparkman Street. Martha Sledge and Mrs. Austin Moore work with Dr. Sittason as hygienists.
Jan. 25, 1960-The Morgan County senior and junior basketball tournaments began at the new Hartselle gym tonight. In one of the first games MCHS seniors beat Ryan 81-56. Luter was once again high scorer for the Tigers with 23 points.
Jan. 26, 1960-MCHS junior basketball players lost to Ryan 46-28 tonight in county tournament play. Penn scored 13 points for MCHS and Whisenant got 21 for the winning Ryan team.
Jan. 27, 1960-A few local Republicans were in Birmingham tonight for a $25-a-plate GOP fund-raising dinner. The featured speaker was the secretary to President Eisenhower’s cabinet. Although Republicans have not carried Alabama since Reconstruction, they are making gains in that direction.
In looking toward this year’s presidential election, the speaker said Vice President Nixon was the best-qualified man ever to be prepared for the nation’s highest office.
Jan. 27, 1960-Jo Chandler of Hartselle will serve as vice president of the Morgan County Council of PTAs during the coming year. Lottie Wright, also of Hartselle, will be secretary.
