Tigers fall to Golden Eagles

Hartselle’s winless streak in Class 5A, Area 15 play grew after Athens escaped with a 65-62 win on the road Friday night at Hartselle’s Pettey Center.
The Tigers dropped to 9-12 overall and 0-6 in area play.
Chris Cain paced Athens with 14 points, while Tyree Malone added 13 points. Chandler Brock had 12 points and Tre Townsend finished with 10 points in the win.
Hartselle’s Sam Fleischman led the Tigers with 20 points.
Terry Wiggins added nine points while Isaiah Fowler, Chance Partlow and Tres Austin chipped in eight points each in the loss.
Athens scored 22 points in the second quarter to open up a 32-26 advantage over the Tigers at the half.
The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 41-30 in the third quarter before Hartselle climbed back into the game with a late run.
Cain hit two free throws with seven seconds remaining in the game to seal the win.
Hartselle’s last shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
Cullman 42, Brewer 38
Brewer’s eight-point halftime advantage disentegrated in the final 16 minutes of the game in a loss to Cullman.
Jordan Bowling led the Patriots with 14 points, while Matt Crowe finished with eight points.
Brewer held a 25-17 lead at the half before Cullman went on a 25-13 run in the final two quarters.
The Patriots still held a five-point advantage three minutes into the final quarter before Cullman put together its game-winning run.
Grayson Smith had 19 points for Cullman in the win.
Girls’ games
Athens 55, Hartselle 47
Athens used an 18-point first quarter to beat Hartselle Friday night in a Class 5A, Area 15 game at the Pettey Center.
Athens’ Lacresha led all scorers with 18 points in the win. Ashley Jackson added 15 points for the Lady Golden Eagles.
Hartselle managed just eight points in the opening quarter and fell behind by 10 points, but the Lady Tigers trimmed the gap to 27-21 at the half.
The Lady Tigers never managed to get the lead in the second half.
Katie Young led Hartselle with 14 points. Alex Holmes added 12 for the Lady Tigers.
Hartselle struggled from the field, hitting just 35 percent of their shots in the loss.
The Lady Tigers dropped to 12-11 overall and 2-4 in area play.
Brewer 86, Cullman 58
Courtney Oldacre scored 24 points, while Elizabeth Bromirski and Chelsey Smith added 20 and 17 points respectively in Brewer’s rout of Cullman.
Hannah Crawford contributed eight points for the Lady Patriots.
The Lady Patriots - now 18-2 and 6-0 in Class 5A, Area 12 play - made a school-record 17 three-pointers in the game.
Bromirski had six 3-pointers for the Lady Patriots, while Oldacre added four.
Brewer led 51-31 at the half and coasted to the easy win.
Cullman’s Jorden Quick finished with 12 points for the Lady Bearcats.
