Union Hill powers to girls’ title

EVA - Union Hill used a strong run in the first half to beat Eva 43-28 Saturday night in the girls’ championship game in the Morgan County Junior High Championships at Eva School.
The Lady Wildcats finished the year with a 24-0 mark. In the past two seasons, Union Hill has gone 42-1 with the lone loss coming in the county championship game last season.
Union Hill team members are Bre Couch, Skylar George, Caity Jett, Jamie Long, Savana Flack, Megan Malone, Haley Cummings, Randi Bowling, Savannah McElyea, Riley Northway and Tyler King.
Brooke Childers, Kaitlin McCaleb, Abby Borden and Brianna Flack are managers.
Northway led the Lady Wildcats with 21 points, with 13 coming in the second half as Union Hill pulled away for the win.
Savana Flack added 12 points for Union Hill, while Bowling added eight points.
Union Hill scored 10 of the first 12 points in the game and pushed out to a commanding 20-6 advantage at the half.
Eva trimmed the lead to just seven points in the third quarter with a quick start to the second half. But the Lady Eagles never got any closer down the stretch.
Union Hill, the top seed in the tournament, beat Cotaco and Danville to reach the finals. But this season, the Lady Wildcats weren’t going to be denied in the finals.
Cheyenne McLemore led Eva with 11 points, while Emily Oden finished with seven points. Malerie Drinkard and Blaire Sanders added three points each.
Eva’s roster includes Erin Lennox, Josie Frost, Kelsey Nethery, Emily Oden, Lexus Brindley, Malerie Drinkard, Sydney Holmes, Cheyenne Holmes, Blaire Sanders, Vanessa Brown, and managers Madison Cobbs, Presley Craft and Jessica Margotta.
Northway, Flack and Bowling all earned all-county honors for Union Hill. Eva was represented by McLemore, Oden and Drinkard.
Also on the all-county team were Shelbi Bowen of Cotaco; Nyleena Cross and Sydnie Shelton of Danville; Peyton Barthel of Decatur Heritage; Patricia Kilgore of Falkville; Morgan Wilson of Lacey’s Spring; Peyton Parker, Jada Beverly and Alex Moore of Priceville; Ryan’s Meagan Knapp; and West Morgan’s Briley Stephenson and Mary Kelley.
