Jobless rate rises to 11 percent

Alabama’s jobless rate rose to 11 percent in December, up from 10.5 percent the month before.
December’s rate represents 225,596 unemployed persons. Wage and salary employment declined by 9,300 with losses occurring in professional and business services; leisure and hospitality; construction; education and health services; government; financial activities; and manufacturing.
Gains occurred in trade, transportation and utilities and other services.
Alabama’s average 2009 unemployment rate was 9.8 percent.
