FLORETTE - Brewer High School’s Lady Patriots leaped past Walker’s Lady Vikings 79-63 Saturday night to capture the 5A Area 12 title and advance to the sub-regional round of the state playoffs. They will meet Central of Tuscaloosa Thursday (tonight) at 7 p.m. at Randolph Ryan Gym.
Walker, a two-time loser to the Lady Patriots in the regular season, used a full-court press defense in an attempt to throttle their high-scoring opponent. It was only successful in part, however, as the Lady Patriots grabbed an early lead and never trailed.
Brewer (22-4) was ahead 18-11 after one quarter, 31-24 at halftime and 52-44 after three quarters. Walker (14-11) pulled to within six points of a tie with 6:30 left in the final period, but Brewer responded with a 10-2 run and finished the game by making four straight free throws.
It was not an easy game - up and down, very physical,” said Brewer head coach Ricky Allen. “Our kids did a lot of good stuff and were in control about 90 percent of the time. But it was the other 10 percent that we need to work on.
Courtney Oldacre paced the Patriots with 21 points. She was followed by Smith with 19 points and eight rebounds, Elizabeth Bromirski had 17 points, four assists and seven rebounds and Hannah Crawford scored 11 points. Rheagan Harvel had six steals.
Leading scorers for Walker were Caroline Rector with 14 points, and Breanna Marbury and A’Sha Holiday each with 12 points.
