Danville upsets Winfield, Carbon Hill for area title

WINFIELD - Danville never played like a fourth seed in the Class 3A, Area 11 tournament championship at Winfield High School.
The Hawks knocked off Carbon Hill 66-56 Monday night to cap Danville’s run to a sub-regional game.
Carbon Hill scored just one point in the first quarter and trailed 26-14 at the end of the first half.
Danville made 23 of 32 free throws in the game to hold off the Bulldogs, who came into the area tournment as the second seed.
Danville will host the West Morgan-Lauderdale County loser Friday in a sub-regional with the winner advancing to the Northwest Regional in Hanceville.
Dillon Childers scored 19 points to lead four Danville players in double figures. Erick Cordova added 14 points, while Zac Alred and Dillon Woods had 12 points each.
Kolton Nichols paced Carbon Hill with 24 points, while Jamel Henderson added 11 points.
Danville 56, Winfield 47
Dillon Woods scored 17 points - including nine in the second half - as Danville upset top-seeded Winfield in the tournament.
Woods added 12 rebounds for the Hawks.
Danville’s Erick Cordova finished with 15 points after scoring six points in the Hawks’ 22-point fourth quarter.
Winfield’s Alex Aultman led all scorers with 18 points. Jarod Lenahan added 12 points for the Pirates.
Danville opened up a 21-16 margin at the end of the first half and stretched the lead to eight points in the third quarter.
Winfield hit five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t chip away at the Danville lead.
