Hartselle dumps Johnson to return to regionals

Playing on the road in the Class 5A sub-regionals Thursday at J.O. Johnson did little to slow down Hartselle.
The Lady Tigers got 22 points from senior Alex Holmes to pick up a 50-35 victory over the Lady Jaguars, sealing a spot in the Northwest Regional tournament.
Holmes added seven rebounds for Hartselle.
Katie Young, also a senior, finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Tigers. She scored nine of her 15 from the free throw line.
Christie Harris and Demetrius McNealy finished with 10 points each for the Lady Jaguars.
Class 5A Boys
Fairfield 57, Brewer 54
Fairfield scored five points in the final 15 seconds Saturday to beat Brewer 57-54 in a Class 5A sub-regional game.
The game was originally scheduled to be played Friday night but was postponed due to bad weather in the Birmingham area.
The loss dropped the Patriots to 15-15 overall and ends Brewer’s season one win shy of the Northwest Regional tournament for the third straight season.
Jordan Bowling led Brewer with 15 points, while Brandon Murray added 11 points. Brett Lavender chipped in nine points in the loss.
Murray finished the game with three 3-pointers.
Brewer rallied from a double-digit deficit by outscoring Fairfield 26-20 in the second half.
Fairfield’s Donzel Little led all scorers with 23 points, while Nick Longmire and Theo Sankey contributed 10 points each.
Fairfield led by as much as 10 points in the third quarter until Brewer cut the gap to 45-44 at the end of the third quarter.
The Patriots regained the lead with a free throw by Matt Crowe and Taylor Bowling added a free throw for a 54-52 advantage with 16.4 seconds remaining in the game.
But Fairfield came right back with a three-point play by Travis Harper and closed out the game with a late bucket off a steal to secure the win.
Class 4A Boys
East Lawrence 56, Priceville 48
East Lawrence used a 20-11 run in the second half to beat Priceville in a Class 4A boys’ sub-regional game Friday night.
The loss ends Priceville’s season one win shy of the Northwest Regional in Hanceville.
The Bulldogs finished 17-13 with the loss.
Tyler Croft led Priceville with a game-high 19 points. Stephen Starkey added 10 points for the Bulldogs.
Priceville opened up a 16-15 lead in the first quarter and stretched the margin to 27-20 at the half before East Lawrence rallied to take the lead.
The Eagles led by two going into the final eight minutes of the game and held off the Bulldogs with a solid defense.
Martin Garner led East Lawrence with 13 points. E.J. Turnbore added 11 points in the win to send the Eagles to the next step in post-season play.
East Lawrence improved to 14-12 overall with the win.
Class 3A Girls
Lauderdale County 53, Danville 47
Ashley Nance’s 15 points wasn’t enough to overcome second-ranked Lauderdale County in a 53-47 loss in a Class 3A girls’ sub-regional game.
Kellyn Williams led Lauderdale County with 30 points.
After battling to a 16-16 tie early, Lauderdale County broke loose with seven straight points and never trailed again.
Lauderdale County led by as many as 10 points at the end of the third quarter and held off third-ranked Danville down the stretch to secure its 17th straight trip to the Northwest Regional tournament in Hanceville.
