Feb. 25, 1960-Lucille Hawkins, Morgan County home demonstration agent, traveled to Montgomery today for her profession’s annual state convention.
Feb. 25, 1960-An FFA speaking contest was held here today. Competing for honors were orators from Madison and Cullman as well as Morgan County. The winner was Billy Petty, a sophomore at Falkville High.
Feb. 26, 1960-MCHS beat Butler of Huntsville in basketball here tonight by the score of 57-50. Luter, Cash, and Speegle were Hartselle’s leading scorers with 16, 14, and 11 points, respectively.
Feb. 26, 1960—The building formerly occupied by the old Hartselle garment factory is now offered as a rental property at the rate of $250 per month. Interested concerns should contact G. P. Frost at SP3-4781.
Feb. 27, 2010-A. F. Walker, a resident of 306 Sloss St., passed away this morning. First Baptist pastor W. L. Carden will preach his funeral Sunday.
Feb. 27, 1960-The Morgan County Democratic Executive Committee continues to accept qualifying papers from individuals who plan to be candidates in this year’s elections. Few if any Republicans are expected to compete for local offices.
Feb. 28, 1960-Today is Heart Sunday. There was a house-to-house canvass by volunteers throughout Hartselle and elsewhere in Morgan County in behalf of the Heart Fund. Local physician Dr. R. D. Sittason has headed up this year’s drive. Richard Stoner is chairman of the Hartselle community campaign. Others involved in different areas of the county include Mrs. Reginald Bogue, Mrs. J. Lewis Sims, Mrs. Burl Vest, the Rev. Tolan Whitten, and Mrs. Sarah Glassock.
Feb. 28, 1960-The inter-church group which has as its goal a spiritual awakening in Hartselle met tonight at the MCHS gym. The guest speaker was Ernest Smith of New Bern, N.C. Six denominations and 11 churches are participating in this effort.
Feb. 28, 1960-Block-Chandler Hospital admitted five Decatur teenagers this afternoon after the youth were involved in a car wreck south of Hartselle. The one vehicle accident involved in the accident was a ‘56 Chevy being driven by Jim McCulloch, 16. He lost control when negotiating a curve on Highway 31.
Feb. 29, 1960-Hal Michael Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewayne Smith, celebrated his leap year birthday today.
Feb. 29, 1960-The Morgan County Democratic primary lost one of its candidates today. Phil Wasson, a veteran member of the County Board of Education, has decided not to seek another term after previously filing his qualifying papers.
March 1, 1960— Mahlon Hartselle, a long-time employee of Allstate Insurance, has received another promotion and will be moving soon to Charlotte, N.C. from Birmingham. Mahlon’s wife, Jean, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Praytor.
March 2, 1960-The Red Cross bloomobile was at First Methodist today taking donations. Volunteer work was done by the new Hartselle chapter of the Jaycees.
March 3, 1960- A local grocery store is offering three dozen eggs for 99 cents. A pound of bacon to go with the eggs is selling for 23 cents.
March 3, 1960-Due to the current cancer scare, a majority of American smokers are now buying filter-tip cigarettes. Although unfiltered Camel is still the most popular brand, it is closely followed by Pall Mall, Winston (the leading filter brand), Lucky Strike, Kent, Chesterfield, Salem, L. &M., Viceroy, and Marlboro.
