Funeral for James A. Whitten, 83, of Hartselle was Monday, February 22, at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Jerry Johnson and Carl Maynard officiating.
Burial was in Mount Tabor Cemetery with full military honors.
Mr. Whitten died Friday, February 19, 2010, on his farm in Hartselle. He was born August 17, 1926, in Morgan County. He retired from Monsanto Chemical Company in Decatur and was a faithful member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his church, his farm and his community. He retired after 33 years of service in the U.S. Army as a Colonel. He commanded the 13th Special Forces unit of the Green Berets. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Silver Star as a veteran of the Korean War. He graduated from Marion Military Institute and attended West Point Academy. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Howard Whitten and Ethel Key Whitten Morris and a daughter, Joy Neal Whitten.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Keel Whitten of Hartselle; four sons, James Wesley Whitten and wife Debra, Timothy Howard Whitten, Joe Nathaniel Whitten and John David Whitten and wife Lisa, all of Hartselle; a sister, Mary Yarbrough and husband Jimmy; seven grandchildren, Gina Rommel, Ashley Whitten, Jason Whitten, Leah Whitten, Elizabeth Webber, Gracie Whitten and Katie Whitten; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were James Wesley Whitten, Joe Nathaniel Whitten, John David Whitten, Jason Bradley Whitten, James Yarbrough, Chris Burgess and David Turner.
