Black History Month was celebrated at Crestline Elementary School recently with a program presented by the second grade class of Carol Harris.
The program focused on the achievements of African Americans, past and present, including George Washington Carver, Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, Jackie Robinson, Jackie Joiner Kersey and Hank Aaron.
Each student portrayed a famous African American and spoke from memory, giving specific information about the individual they represented, including his or her awards, honors and achievements. A collection of books about famous African Americans was displayed in front of the stage. It reflected high achievements in the fields of government, arts, music, entertainment, sports, religion and civil rights.
The students got their audience involved in the celebration by leading them in the singing of “Sweet Low, Sweet Chariot” and one of Michael Jackson’s famous song and dance numbers.
