Several Morgan County towns are joining some 200 others across Alabama taking part in the Great Alabama Homecoming this year. The state has designated 2010 as the Year of Small Towns and Downtowns. The tourism initiative is designed to bring attention to activities throughout the state as well as the unveiling of historic markers.
“Communities will welcome former residents to participate in food, crafts and music events that celebrate each town’s unique characteristics,” Gov. Bob Riley said. Historic markers written by local historians and provided by the Alabama Tourism Department will be unveiled. Events such as Demopolis’ Christmas on the River, Hartselle’s Depot Days and Ozark’s Claybank Jamboree are well established, while Jacksonville, Ashland, Gulf Shores and York – among others – will host events organized specifically for this year’s homecoming theme.”
Included in this year’s official events are: Somerville Celebration (May 1); Eva Frontier Days (Sept. 18-25); Hartselle Depot Days (Sept. 18); and Falkville Fall Festival (Oct. 30).
