March 11, 1960-Bama Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant was in this area tonight to speak at a banquet honoring Allen Blevins, a former Moulton player who at center was a key factor in several of the Crimson Tide’s wins this past season. He has lettered for three years.
March 11, 1960-Hartselle physician Dr. R. D. Sittason reported today that funds collected in the current Morgan County Heart Fund drive (of which he is chairman) now total $4,250.
March 11, 1960-A revival is now in progress at Calvary Baptist Church on Corsbie Street. The evangelist is Almon Terry. Calvary advertises itself as an “independent, old-fashioned Baptist church.”
March 12, 1960-Leland Lindsey, a MCHS student and son of Mr. and Mrs. David D. Lindsey, won the Decatur Jaycees’ speaking competition this afternoon, using as his subject, “My True Security.”
March 12, 1960-Three Hartselle students at the University of Alabama made the dean’s list for the fall semester. They are William H. Stewart Jr., William Hartselle III, and Ruth Gayle Cost.
March 13, 1960-In a widely read AP story published today, Rev. Billy Graham was quoted as saying that Islam was making great gains over Christianity in the battle for the hearts and minds of Asians and Africans.
Graham said he had “met a number of people who think America may eventually be overwhelmed by Islam.”
March 14, 1960-Hartselle State Rep. Bob Gilchrist sent a telegram to Gov. John Patterson this morning asking him to call a special legislative session to deal with the drastic cut in school appropriations necessitated by proration. Morgan County teachers are now on record as saying they will stop teaching if cuts in their salaries are ordered. Some people are supporting an additional 1-cent sales tax.
March 14, 1960-Hartselle received about three inches of snow today. Altogether, since mid-February, about 20 inches of snow have fallen. Joe Wheeler Co-op manager Floyd Anderson reported that power lines were down in the Flint area.
March 15, 1960-Electricity has now been restored to the Union Hill community. The area was hit by an ice storm last week that resulted in the downing of power lines by the dozens. Human needs were met by a Red Cross disaster team led by Fred Summerford.
March 16, 1960-Hartselle students and those elsewhere in Alabama began their AEA holidays today.
March 17, 1960-Hartselle First Baptist is the site of a microfilming project being conducted currently by the Alabama Historical Society and the Howard College library. Persons with documents of historical interest are urged to bring them to the church for copying.
March 17, 1960-Elbert McNutt, a Morgan County employee and Falkville resident, was killed this morning when he fell off a bulldozer he was operating on Lawrence Cove Road, approximately 10 miles east of his home.
March 17, 1960—Morgan County schools have received nearly $43,000 under the federal impacted areas program. This program is designed to help areas with substantial numbers of federal employees. The grant was announced by Senators Lister Hill and John Sparkman and Congressman Bob Jones.
March 17, 1960-Mrs. H. C. McRee, 78, passed away today at Hartselle Hospital. Her husband, Dr. McRee, was health officer of Morgan County for many years and she was a familiar face at Groover Grocery following his death. Her funeral will be held Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. W. M. Maxwell and Warren Hamby officiating. Among her Hartselle survivors is a daughter, Mrs. Otto Weinman.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Lauderdale, G. P. Frost, Charles Oden, Hoyt Groover, Gordon Groover, and Hal Orr.
March 17, 1960-Mrs. Buford Bentley is now recovering at home after recently being a patient at Decatur General Hospital.
