Jobless rate tops 11.1 percent

Alabama’s unemployment rate for January topped 11.1 percent, up from December’s rate of 10.9 percent.
That rate represents 228,105 employees. Losses occurred in trade, transportation and utilities, professional and business, government and leisure and hospitality sectors.
The only monthly gain was in education and health services sectors.
The average unemployment rate for the same month the previous year was 10.1 percent.
