Interstate reopens, repairs continue
By Staff
After a week of closure, Interstate 65 is open again for northbound traffic.
The interstate opened early evening March 26. It had been closed for a week due to a sinkhole near the Hartselle exit. The closure forced traffic off the interstate onto Highway 31, backing it up for miles during peak traffic hours.
The northbound lane remains closed, but Alabama Department of Transportation officials added an additional left lane to alleviate crowding and allow for continued repairs. ALDOT said the sinkhole resulted in a landslide along the side of the road. A concrete barrier will be placed on the side of the road to protect workers. Sinkhole repairs will start later this year.
