An eighth grader at Hartselle Junior High School, Haley captured third place in the North Division of the Alabama Peace Officers Association’s 18th annual essay competition. To commemorate her achievement, she received a $125 check from Capt. Stanley McNutt of the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office and 20th district vice president of the sponsoring organization.
The presentation was made in the school library on Monday in the presence of her mother Kim Jared, advanced English teacher Shelia Reeves and Principal Don Pouncey.
McNutt said Haley’s essay was one of more than 1,,000 submitted by eighth graders from throughout the state. In addition to receiving cash awards, winning essays will be published in the autumn issue of the Peace Officers Journal.
Reeves said her classes have participated in the essay competition before but Haley state-winning entry is a first.
Haley’s parents are Matt and Kim Jared.
