Hartselle’s firefighting equipment got a big boost this week with the long-awaited arrival of a $325,000 custom-built pumper, which was placed on order in February 2007.
The longer-than-usual wait was due to the manufacturer—American LaFrance of Charleston, S.C.—filing bankruptcy and subsequently being purchased by another company, according to Hartselle Fire Chief Steve Shelton.
The new pumper arrived in Hartselle on Sunday and was placed in service the following day at Station 2. It replaces a1986 Ford fire engine.
The wait was worth it, according to Mayor Dwight Tankersley.
“It’s a remarkable piece of equipment and is going to enhance the performance of our firefighters, keeping safety first in mind.”
The new pumper is powered by a 400 Cummings diesel engine, Allison transmission, a 2,500 GPM pump, a 750-gallon water tank, hydraulic light tower and ladder rack, built-in PTU driven generator, Amkus rescue tools—cutter, spreader, ram–hydraulic hose reels and a Simi power unit.
